What is IgA Nephropathy (IgAN)?

IgAN is the most common type of kidney inflammation worldwide. It is usually found in people between the ages of 20 and 40 and often shows up as blood or protein in the urine. About 30–40% of people with IgAN may develop serious kidney disease 20 to 30 years after first showing symptoms. IgAN happens when the body makes too much of a substance called Gd-IgA1. The immune system reacts by making antibodies that stick to it, forming clumps that build up in the kidneys. This buildup causes scarring and inflammation, which can damage the kidneys over time and may lead to kidney failure. Right now, there are no approved treatments that directly target the root cause, Gd-IgA1.

  • Participants Must:

  • Participants must have biopsy-confirmed IgA Nephropathy.
  • Participants Must Not:

  • Any secondary IgAN
  • Any cause of chronic kidney disease not diagnosed as IgAN or due to non-IgAN cause
